As we step into the new year, I find myself reflecting on two powerful ideas that have deeply resonated with me recently. The first is a quote that struck home: “Turn all resources into ways to achieve victory.” The second is the realization that growth can be measured in far more ways than just the bottom line. Together, these thoughts offer a foundation for a mindset of purpose and resilience—one that I hope to embrace and share in 2025.
The first quote reminds us of the incredible potential we each have to turn whatever we are given into tools for success. Resources aren’t just tangible items like tools, equipment, or finances; they also include knowledge, relationships, time, and even challenges. In business and in life, every obstacle can be reframed as an opportunity to learn or pivot toward a better strategy. For me, this means looking at every aspect of my work and asking, “How can I use this to move closer to our goals?” Whether it’s investing in more efficient equipment, fostering collaboration with key partners, or finding creative uses for byproducts, this mindset transforms everyday tasks into steps toward victory.
The second idea—that growth isn’t always about the bottom line—is equally important. In today’s fast-paced, profit-driven world, it’s easy to equate success solely with financial metrics. But sometimes, true growth comes from simplifying, focusing, and ensuring that the systems in place support sustainable operations and a healthy work environment. Over the past year, we at Mead Lumber Co. have made intentional decisions to prioritize efficiency and employee well-being, even at the cost of reducing our weekly hours and bottom line. The result? A more motivated team, fewer delays, and a more resilient business model.
As we navigate this year, I want to carry these lessons forward. I aim to see every resource as a potential tool for success and every challenge as an opportunity to grow in unexpected ways. At the same time, I want to continue redefining what success means—not just in terms of revenue but in the strength of relationships, the quality of our work, and the impact we make in our community.
To all my fellow business owners, leaders, and dreamers: I challenge you to adopt this mindset in the year ahead. Consider how you can leverage your unique resources to achieve your victories, and don’t shy away from redefining growth in a way that aligns with your values and vision. Together, let’s make 2025 a year of meaningful progress, resilience, and success—in every sense of the word.
